The Final Link
This pedestrian and bicycle bridge connects a shared-use path that crosses four municipalities along the North Shore Channel. The path is called the North Shore Channel Trail and runs 6.7 miles from Chicago to Evanston. This project created the final link making the trail contiguous. Civiltech is thrilled to have been part of this exciting and meaningful project having provided Phase I, Phase II, and Structural Engineering services.

The Bridge Construction
The bridge construction is a single-span prefabricated structure with arched metal truss sides. The design also included MSE retaining walls, HMA bike path connections, and lighting improvements. Good design aesthetics were critical and the bridge, retaining walls, and railings were detailed with decorative treatments.
Interagency Coordination
The project included extensive interagency coordination. Agencies involved in the project included the Chicago Department of Transportation, Illinois Department of Transportation, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, and the Chicago Park District. Also, a Regional 404 Permit was obtained from the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Ribbon Cutting
On November 10, 2020, Civiltech staff attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Bridge which had opened in late spring. Representatives from CDOT, IDOT, and Active Transportation Alliance as well as the 50th Ward Alderman shared remarks about the importance, success, and popularity of the recently completed bridge.
